IMS PREPARES INTERNS

For Life After Graduation

Every now and then, you run into an old teacher and share a few laughs, a hug and even a thank you. But for Myia Harris, her mom’s run in with former professor John D. Calhoun, Ph.D., was much more. It now has the younger Harris on a journey that could be life changing.

“Dr. Calhoun was my mom’s teacher at Jackson State,” explained Harris. “My mom was telling him that I was looking for a job; and he told me to apply (at IMS).”

Following an interview with the company’s Chief Fiscal Officer, John May, Harris was offered a paid internship working in the company’s finance office in Jackson, Mississippi.

“IMS prepares me for the real world because it is opening my eyes to the real insight of how human resources works and gives me a lot of knowledge that I can apply while still in school and at work.”

That insight and knowledge is critically important to Harris, a 20-year-old Business Administration and Business Management major at Jackson State University. She dreams of one day opening her own Human Resource Consultant business with her mother.

“Human Resource is not an easy job; but it is always needed,” she said.

Harris, and fellow intern Javoris Smith are learning first hand, just how important Human Resource really is.

“I am responsible for managing payroll, inventory purchasing and replenishment and all American Express company cards,” Smith explained.

The Wesson native is a Business Administration major, Finance minor at Belhaven University.

He quickly learned to understand the value of managing payroll for a staff of nearly 300 employees.

“On weeks we process, it makes me feel important and part of something big when we are able to close out early and everything goes as scheduled. Putting such responsibility in an intern’s hands is crucial and shows how much I am trusted.”

Both Smith and Harris said they're grateful for the knowledge they're receiving while working at IMS.

“We never stop learning,” said Smith. “Our management, CEO and CFO see to it that we are well involved in various areas throughout the company.”
