Opens First International Office in Africa & Welcomes The New VP of IMS-Africa
We are pleased to announce that in September 2018, IMS Engineers officially opened its first overseas branch in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Addis Ababa office will serve as our Africa Headquarters. The IMS Africa branch will enable us to participate in the rapidly growing economies in Africa and the large infrastructure projects that African governments are pursuing.
The Addis Ababa office will be led by Akayu Mekonnen P.E., a native Ethiopian with over 19 years’ of experience in transportation design and project management in Texas. “The timing couldn’t be more perfect for the IMS leadership and I to forge ahead and be a part of Ethiopia’s rapid economic growth. Ethiopia is rich with long history and diverse cultures; there is great hope and excitement for the majority of Ethiopians all over the world,” he said.
Akayu Mekonnen, P.E. is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and has been named Vice-President of IMS-Africa. A veteran engineer with years of Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) experience, Mr. Mekonnen will also serve as Transportation Lead for the firm’s transportation practice.
Mr. Mekonnen will be based out of the firm’s newly established IMS-Africa office in Ethiopia. In his dual role as VP and Transportation Lead, Mr. Mekonnen will oversee a broad portfolio of responsibilities, including business development, transportation project management, client relations and the promotion of the IMS brand in Africa.
